Seven Tips on Preparing for Your Family Photo Shoot

Having a professional family photo session is a special occasion. Preparing can seem overwhelming but with a little planning, it can be a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Get everyone excited for the photo session

In the days leading up to the photo session, let your kids know there will be a photographer taking their photos. Get them excited about the activities they will be doing and the location they will be heading to such as the beach or park. Let them know it will be a fun experience and encourage them to be themselves. You can even offer a reward for after the session such as a dinner out or ice cream so they are extra excited.

Pick a location that reflects your family's style

Most professional photographers will help you select a location that reflects your family's personality and style. Love the outdoors? Consider a park such as Holmdel Park or Spring Lake or a beach such as Belmar or Long Branch. Prefer an urban vibe? Look for a downtown area such as Red Bank or Asbury Park.

Another thing to consider is the time of day you'll be taking the photos. Early morning or late afternoon light can be especially flattering. Ultimately, the goal is to find a location where your family feels comfortable and can have some fun while capturing those precious memories.

Schedule your hair, makeup and nail appointments

Whether you go to a pro or plan to get ready yourself, make sure your hair is touched up in advance and your nails are free of chipped nail polish. This will ensure you look your best in the photos.

Select outfits in advance

Plan your outfits at least a week before your photo session. Don't try to match, instead coordinate your outfits with complimentary colors. Avoid busy patterns, logos, and text that can be distracting. Flowing dresses and skirts create visual movement and interest. Accessories such as headbands, scarves and hats can add to the visual as well. Make sure the outfits reflect your personalities and are comfortable to move in including your shoes. At anytime, feel free to text me photos of your wardrobe and I will help you make your selections!

Make sure everyone is fed and well rested

If you have an infant or toddler, make sure they nap before the session and older kids are not overscheduled with activities. It's important that everyone is well rested and eats a good meal. If you pack snacks for your kids, select ones that are not messy or sticky such as Goldfish crackers, cheese cubes and dried fruit.

Bring props or anything that will add fun for your kids

Bubbles, balloons, a favorite stuffed animal or a skateboard are just some items that can add excitement to a session and can be incorporated into the photos. If you're including a pet in the session, make sure to have a friend come along and monitor him/her when he/she is not in the photos. Bring some treats and toys for your pet as well.

Relax and have fun!

Most importantly, have fun! Don't worry about your kids posing or looking at the camera. Throw your kid up in the air, give your wife a kiss, chase each other around. As your photographer, it's my job to help you feel relaxed and engaged. As a result, you will have beautiful photo artwork to enjoy that perfectly captures your love and connections.
